would anyone recomend a security alarm? I think it may be a good idea, but am unsure if it is worth the effort and $$. if anyone has done this please let me know.
I've seen alot with remote start/stop and ignition lock outs, though I like the lockout idea, i'm not too keen on the remote start, i mean, why would i want to start my bike from 2000ft away?
also the paging system ones seem like a good idea, i'd want to know if my alarm was going off if I wasn't close enough to hear it.

:? Well, My thing is... if they really want it... it's gonna be gone. You could put one on to lessen the chances your bikes gonna get jacked but if you really want to protect it... just keep it in view and be smart about where you park it.

I use a Xena disc lock. Has an audible alarm and will at least attract some eyes or suspicion. Also serves as a reminder to remove the lock before you start to ride.

Yeah Caliper locks atleast make it harder, but if someone wants it unless its in your living room they'll find a way. I had this great GPS tracker, all kinds of nifty little things you could check.. damn company went out of business. My feelings were if someone stole it, call up some friends and follow them :)

Unlike cars a bike can be picked up by a couple guys and thrown into a van/truck/suv...there isn't much deturant to this kind of theft.

I agree...bikes can be picked up and taken away... but if you have an alarm, it will draw attention and they might think twice. I'd rather be extra cautious than to just say "it's a lost cause". Not sure which alarm I'll get yet, but if someone knows of a good one, let me know. thanks.

Any alarm for a bike MUST have a proximity (sp) sensor in my openion. That way you aren't waiting for some dumbass to bump into it and knock it over till it goes off...

After talking to a sales rep from a mc dealership. I'm pretty freaked out how humans can do such atrocities. To steal is so freaking wrong. The rep told me about how one dude used 2 chain locks and his bike still got stolen. The b@stards pretty much cut through the chains. And another dude got his bike stolen by having some b@stards carrying the bike into a get-away van, even when locking it down with chain or cable locks.

Has anyone used the Scorpio SR-i500 with the full package setup? I wish there was some better review of using this alarm. However, I would probably add 3 chain or cable locks, a disc lock and a Scorpio alarm. And I wish parking lots have some tough anchor hardened steel loops for motorcyclists like us to lock our prized possession R6's.

Chaining your bike is a good idea in theory. Downside is you have to do something with the chains. I mean if you use them at home or work you could leave them there but what if you go out. Now you have 20 pounds of chains and two poss three locks your trying to cram under your seat. It's an unforetunate (sp?) situation and trade-off we must deal with.

I wouldnt even go with a lock...find a place hard to find on the bike and put like an ignition kill switch on it or something like that....too bad they dont make osmething that can force and keep the shifter in 1st gear and somethning to keep the clutch lever from being depressed....lock it in drive, too hard to move it short of picking it up with a lift

Hey does anyone heard of this service?

http://www.cycletrak.com/index.html

Seems like a very nice added feature especially in tandem with the Scorpio SR-i500 but I'm really curious of it's performance.

Then one can add a self-destruct feature wohahahahaaa. j/k...
but really Cycletrak does sound nice, but don't know if I want to spend that much more for the 24hr service. Gotta check out the demo on www.microtrakgps.com.

I just ordered the jacked up Scorpio SR-i500 with all the bells and whistles, it should be in Friday. I'll let you know how it goes both ease of install and how well it performs.

Ok, so the Alarm is in. This thing rocks. The perimeter sensor is a little sensative but is really nice and I can adjust it down. I put the alarm under the rear seat since that's lockable and the front seat can be taken off with an allen wrench. I made sure to get the model with the built in capacitor so that if someone cuts the wire it'll still work. It's pretty loud too. The remote range is incredible. Let's hope it does it's job of theft deterant. Install was fairly painless. Probably took me 1-2 hours since I had never had the rear disassembled. You'll have to take off the rear body work to get to the turn signal wires. The snaps were really easy to get apart with a screw driver. All in all I say I'm very pleased with the result.

What I don't like about alarms is that they go off when a heavy 18 wheeler
goes by and people get anoyed fast. But I will likely get one too. How much did it cost you? Just how sensitive is it to trigger the alarm? And I think a kill switch or 2 ignitions is a waste of time and nearly 100% useless due to the fact that bikes don't usually get driven away when they get stolen, they are simply lifted intoa truck/van.
Chains can SLOW them down but remember that an oxy-acetylene cutting tourch will cut through ANYTHING metalic no matter how thick it is in a matter of seconds.

You're right about the lock stuff. Torches are just evil. A brake rotor lock might help a bit since they'd have to ruin the front wheel/fork but if they just picked it up and put it in a van too bad so sad. I adjusted the perimeter sensor and it works really well. If you get within a few feet of my bike it starts the warning beeps. The nice thing about the Scorpion alarm is that it pages the remote when the bike is moved or someone is sensed near the bike. If you're close enough you can go beat them down or whatever. The whole package (Alarm,Perimeter sensor, ignition kill, battery backup, wire kit) cost 350 shipped from KneeDraggers.com. KneeDraggers were very helpful and accommodating I'd highly recommend doing business with them. I haven't installed the ignition kill yet, but everything else was pretty much a breeze.

how big is the remote for the SR-i500??

i would say disc locks are about as expensive as youd want to go. with any alarm system on it, unless the entire bike is electrified, if they want it, there taking it. i had a buddy who had the best alarm on his hot rod, came outside in the morning and the car was on blocks, the wheels, stereo, bucket seats, steering wheel, speakers, subs, amps, and YES EVEN THE ALARM WAS STOLEN. if they want it, they will get it. insurance is you best bet on getting a new one

I managed to source a datatool alarm of ebay for a fraction of the cost of what it would cost to buy at a dealer. It was a bit of a bugger to fit but was worth it.

If you opt for a chain what you can do is link it with the chain of the bike parked next to you. Unless the thief cuts the chain insitu it makes it a lot more difficult for them to put the bike into the back of a van as they have to lift two bikes together, or more if every one does this.

I was looking at the SR-i500. I hear the range on the remote sucks. My opinion on that was, how far away from your bike do you need to be to disable it. If I see someone stealing my bike, I'm not going to think about the alarm button. I'm going to grab the nearest stick and attempt to pumble somebody. Just my two cents.

To bad they don't have Lo-Jack in MD for bikes.

Typically, if your bike is kitted up enough they won't bother as there is bound to be another bike next to or around the corner with no locks.
Best bets are -
Datatag / Smartwater - if they steal it they can't sell the bits on as easily
Disc lock/chain - more visual but every little helps
Alarm with tracker - if the bastads steel it the alarm automatically contacts a security company who phone you to check what the score is. If it's being nicked they track it and unless they put it in a lead building you should be laughing. Well, not crying at least.

Alternatively leave it unlocked, hide behind a bush and beat the sh1t out of c#nt who tries on. I find if they can't walk they can't rob.

Correct that - they can't rob if they can't walk.

I need to proof read this shite I write before clicking.

I MYSELF HAVE A 14mm XENA LOCK AND A 20mm BULLY CABLE LOCK.. THEY BEST THING I HEAR TO DO IS TO FIND A CRAPPY COVER, HAVE 2 DISC LOCKS (ONE ON EACH SIDE, SO YOU CANT GO FWD OR REV) AND A COUPLE CABLES.. BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY.. ITS ALOT OF WORK TO PARK YOUR BIKE, BUT IT ONLY TAKES A COUPLE SECONDS FOR THE PROS TO WALK OFF WITH IT.. NOW IF THERES A CABLE.. MAKE THAT A GOOD MIN. OR 2 LOL

I have a clifford G5 alarm and would be inclind not to leave my bike anywhere that I couldn't see it. As some of the guys have said if they're serious about taking it then they'll go to all sorts of measure. if you use a chain try to lock it to a post or something. If not it can still be picked up and carried away without cutting the chain. If you use a disc lock then put on on both back and front wheel near the caliper so the bike hasn't any movement forwards or backwards. Again I've non for people to only use one disc lock and what the scum have done is lifted the bike up onto the wheel without the disc lock and wheeled it forwards.

If you can go for locks that have alarms, Xena for example. In my garage I've got the bike locked down to 3 ground achors and each lock is alarm. The Garage has 2 individual alarms and the bike itself is alarm. any one goes near it and the bitch is going to blow his ear drums out.

XENA locks are the best anti security devices for under $100. but the bike can still be carried away on one wheel while the disc alarm is going off. I recommend using a steel cable and padlock to chain your bike to a post or rail along with the disc lock, that way thieves will want to find an easier target. Dont waste your money on those huge inch-thick security chains because an independent tv network in England discovered that all those heavy security chains can be broken in less than 1 minute with a bolt cutter, despite their 5-minute claims.
