: Cheap plastic helmets vs. expensive fiberglass helmets
Check out Motorcyclist magazine for the month of June. There's an article in there about how plastic helmets, the kind you can get for $100 or less, are actually MORE PROTECTIVE than the expensive helmets that you pay multiple hundreds of dollars for! I am absolutely not kidding. I would highly suggest picking up a copy on the June Motorcyclist magazine and reading the article about helmets.
Has anyone seen/read the article I'm talking about?
Cooper29 05-17-2005, 08:04 AM No, but I seriously doubt that it is correct. Sorry man, but even if it is printed in their magizine I am not buying what they are selling if you know what I mean. There is an old saying that you get what you pay for, I think helmets fall into that saying well. I refuse to believe that a cheap plastic helmet is going to be more protective then a high end racing replica.....if that was the case, you would see world superbike and GP racers all sporting plastic lids.
I'm not trying to say that I'm right, I'm just going to explain what the article says. I know it sounds crazy, but the premise on which it's based makes sense. The plastic helmets are still very hard, hard enough to protect, but they are also at the level where they flex when hit, which absorbs impact better. The average G forces applied to the head were actually lower with the plastic helmets than fiberglass ones. Harder isn't always better. They did multiple tests on multiple helmets where they dropped them from different heights on different surfaces, and they have evidence to back it up the results. I know it seems unbelieveable, but I found it very interesting. Even if you don't believe it, you would probably find it interesting to read the article.
So with no surprise, Snell has come out with an article rejecting the facts in the Motorcyclist article. Now I'm stuck in between again, and I can't decide which I want to believe. If you'd like to read the Snell article, it can be found here: http://www.smf.org/pdf/btlo_response.pdf
Cooper29 05-18-2005, 09:17 AM I am sticking with Arai.........no "team rubbermade" here. Save the plastic for Dunlop, they can continue to make their tires out of it!!! HAHAHAHA.
Haha, good one. That made me laugh. :D
yami_R6 05-18-2005, 02:05 PM I don't care what anyone says,I will also stick with my
ARAI. I love it
burnrubber 06-04-2005, 03:03 AM i dunno man, if you smoke your melon, i have trouble believing that plastic holds together better than fibre-glass. i use a fibre-glass bucket and i like it.
Well I just got a helmet, and I posted about it in the safety gear section. It's a good one. Fiberglass I think.
NTFireFighter 06-04-2005, 12:01 PM I wonder if there are helmets out there with carbon fiber base in it yet...i know they been making them for BMX and are really popular, then again your on a bike not a motorcycle so chance of breaking are slim
burnrubber 06-05-2005, 02:55 AM ive heard there is but its somewhere in the 1200-1500 dollar range, extremely light though
NTFireFighter 06-05-2005, 09:08 AM yea i used to have one, it was 500 bucks for a bmx helemt, but it was like wearing nothing at all, great vision and comfortable...downside is that it can shatter, i would probally look for something that has kevlar based polimer built into it as well to reinforce it
I read that article. They are wrong.

Don't be too quick to believe everything you see, hear, read, etc...

ducasuzu 07-30-2011, 10:29 PM Arai/Shoei and maybe Suomy and Bell. No way I'm putting my yolk inside a $59 shell
Chaotic 12-14-2011, 07:09 AM Never skimp on gear. Period. Trust me, I have crashed a few times and had it not been for quality gear, there is no telling what kind of shape I would be in...or if I would even be here.
If you continue to ride, you WILL crash. That is a fact. It isnt a matter of "if" it is a matter of "when". So always be prepared for a crash.
Too many people mix up the terms "cheap" and "inexpensive". A helmet can be inexpensive, while still being a quality helmet. You can spend thousands on a helmet if you want and most people feel you have to spend at least $600 to get a "good" one, but that simply isn't the case.
There are plenty of Bell Helmets (http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=7357)that are inexpensive, but very good. I race in a Bell Helmet and love them. Lightweight and excellent air flow.
