Issue is with my 2000 streetfighter r6. I appreciate any help in advance.

I watch the cluster religiously because of these issues, I can say with confidence the coolant temperature has never read above 210-220 at a stoplight, and 180-190 cruising.

Red light on cluster is on, oil level light is flashing, but i have religiously checked it, and overfilled it about half a quart and it never goes away. I hear this is a known issue, but felt like noting it.

What happens is my motorcycle will run flawlessly, kick over on the first crank, and run like a bat out of hell just fine, for about 15-30 minutes. Then a cylinder will cut out or two, eventually leading to the bike not being able to produce any power, I will coast to a stop, try and crank it and it will not start. If I leave the bike alone for 10-15 minutes and try it kicks over great, runs fine, but for a much lower amount of time.

Figured it was the plugs, so I pulled them out, of course BLACK as the night, swapped them with brand new NGK bre10k or whatever, factory plug. Bike ran even better, and rode about 70 hard miles up to mt. charleston. Turned around to ride down, and the same **** happened. Bike starts losing power, starts missing, throttle just makes it worse, then it just dies. So I coast it down to the bottom for about 15-20 minutes, get to the freeway, and it starts! Drives another 15 miles home without an issue.

The bike sits in the garage now cause I can't ride a bike with an intermittent amount of run time. I can't make an assessment as to wether it is fuel related or spark, I'm leaning towards spark because when it starts losing power, you can still get it to move a bit and some cylinders still fire, until it decides to quit outright, which sounds like to me at least some cylinders are getting fuel and i'm having a spark issue.

Now, when I changed my plugs, I read a guide that said there was a heatshield that was a bitch to get around. When I changed them, I took the gas tank off, the airbox, and there sat my coil on plugs. No heatshield, could this be an issue?

Also, when I took my gas tank off, there were 2 vacuum nipples sitting next to the fuel filter open, leaking gas when I tipped it over. I ran a U between them with a vacuum hose, any idea wtf these are for?

Thanks guys, any help is appreciated.

Ok it could be a couple of things. Check the easiest thing first. It is not because of the heat shield so thats not a worry. But if I were you i would check the stator and the regulator. Take a couple of tools with you on your next ride to take the seat off and check battery voltage when it dies. Does the speedometer needle jump around right before it dies?

On the Regulator check forward and reverse bias with the reg. unplugged, and the multimeter set in OHMS or diode. If that is fine check the output of the stator with the meter in VDC. That is my first guess as to what to check. If thats not it then check the vaccum lines. The 99-02 are known for the reg. and the stators going out. Good luck!
