I just put Mobil 1 red cap 15w-50 in my 2001 R6, as far as the tightness of the filter I've never heard of it having to be tighter than a cars, I might be wrong, but I've never heard that.

Motul oil is really good. A little pricey for the full synthetic....but worth it.

The oil issue is always a big deal. When I had a Ducati oil brand would set off a firestorm of replies that raised hell. I use Mobil 1 for sport bikes. Yes the stuff is expensive but I change my oil once a year at the begining of the season and ride about 1,500 miles a year. I use Mobil 1 in my cars even though I know I can not tell the diffrence. The best thing is you can get it anywhere sometimes on sale and most of all it is a very good produce. Use Mobil 1 or any high grade oil from a major munufacturer and your bike will be fine. Remember this, these bikes are not race bikes and are designed with the fact people will not take the best care of them or maintain them correctly as time goes on.

...yeah I'm gonna have to "disagree" on the race bike thing.
These are race bikes. Race bikes with turn signals. The difference between showroom and podium in the 600 superstock class is sometimes as little as HH+ brakes and stickier tires.

Back to the question at hand. With oil in mind, you can't go wrong with yamalube. If you want synthetic they offer it, or you can use a quility synth like AMSOIL or REDLINE or SYLKOLENE. The key thing to look for is that it is MOTORCYCLE OIL and not just motor oil. There is a big difference in the characteristics of the oil... i.e shear co-efficients, detergent packages, long term viscocity break down... things that aren't as important in a car engine that spins to 6k as opposed to an r6 that spins to 16k rpm.

Fierohink is right. These were the cutting edge race bikes of 5 years ago or maybe even 3 years ago. But I can not tell you the last time I saw a Jap bike broken down because of an engine blowup. These little things are not going to break unless you love to sit at 14,500 rpm in a parting lot untill the things detonates. In the end use a good quality oil and you will be fine. I would like to use Redline but that stuff is really expensive. I say if you go with Mobil1 for sport bikes staf with it and change brands.
