uh-oh looks like it's time for a transmisson, depending on who owned the bike 1st they might have damaged your shift forks and gear dogs and what u are feeling is actually the second gear slipping untill the fork grabs it, the dogs are probably rounded off causing the slippage. get it into the shop immedeatly it can cost over 2k if not taken care of immedeatly. its an expensive repair regardless tho sorry man.

You might want to talk to a yamaha dealer first. The '99-'02 had some problems with the 2nd and 6th gear drums, where the dogs were rounding off. I read on another r6 forum a while back. Anyway, a bunch of people were getting together for a class action against yamaha to try and get a recall. Kind of like the '02s leaking battery f'n up your swingarm.
Also when you get the shutter do you hear any wierd noises? Any vibrations? any onthe description you can give?

does anyone know if yamaha is going to warranty these problems. I have delt with both of these. I have had my second gear shift fork replaced and bought a new battery at the beginning of last season(04) due to it leaking on the swingarm. I have an 02 and the tranny started to go at 7,000 miles and a year old.
thanks

I think that yamaha would take care of the leaking battery problem since it was a previous problem, as far as the transmission goes im really not to sure. You should check for service buletins for your yr bike or maybe for recalls for service. If you go to a well known dealer who does a lot of business then the service department should be able to tell you their experence with getting yamaha to cover that stuff, what they will / did and what they wont / didnt.

Okay on the battery, most dealers were only going to replace it if you were still within your one year warranty period. I ride with a couple of guys who were able to get theirs done at like 15/16 months, mainly due to our dealer being cool and one of our riding buddies. Mine didn't show until winter '03 into '04 so it was like 20 months. I still haven't replaced it. My swingarm is really hazed up but it gets lots of track time and the battery still hold a charge so appearence isn't top priority anymore.

The trans problem has been a huge up hill battle. About a year year and a half ago alot of the posters from r6 messagenet (http://www.r6messagenet.com/forums) were trying to get together and form a class action suit against yamaha claiming they new about the problem. I say up-hill battle because lets I was involved, the riders couldn't determine which bikes were affected. Was it bad metal for the gears? Was it improper assembly? If it was metal fatigue, was it yamaha's doing or the supplier? Since I haven't had the problem *knock on wood* myself, I haven't followed close attention. But search the other forum.

I believe when the trans has this problem it affects 2nd and 6th gears. Once you shift into that gear it'll slip like a false nuetral along with that awful clackety noise like when you don't kick hard enough into the next gear coming out of nuetral.[/url]
