ATV oil isn't the best choice for a motorcycle, but it is better than car oil. Motorcycle specific oils are designed and formulated to guard strongly against shear breakdown. Shear breakdown is when the tendency of the oil molecules to be torn apart under pressure and friction, like the side sliding gears of our cassette style transmissions.

ATVs have similar transmissions and so the oil should have some of the same properties, but it won't be exact i.e. pollution detergents, high rev/high temp stability, etc.

As far as other checks, plugs are a good start also check the air filter, brakes linings, brake fluid, chain slack, sprocket tooth wear, and tires.
