Well, guys, I did it. Not even a year riding and I get into my first wreck.

I had just went to my local cycle shop to get my first 600 miles service. Mind you the guy was cool as hell and he charged me around $150 less than my Yamaha Dealership.

Anyway, it was around 6:30 at night and around 30+ degrees. I got dropped off by my wife and I went inside to pay. After paying I got on my bike, stopped at the exit with a red light. It turned green, I was making a left turn on an intersection, gave the throttle a slight twist, and BANG. The next thing I know, the back end came out from under me and I slammed into the street and the bike went skidding on its left side for 5 feet.

I was in complete shock! What the hell happened? I went to pick up the bike, threw it into neutral and wheeled it onto the side. The left grip and clutch was broken and bent. The fairing, engine cap and rear arm were scratched. Luckly, I was able to roll it back to the bike shop. Now I am waiting to get an estimate of the damages.

Now I am left with going through the scenario in my head on what happened? Were the tires too cold, was their oil on the tires left from the bike shop? Did I accelerate too fast around the bend?

Just thought I'd share and if anyone would like to share similar experience please do. I am not sure if this is a sign to just sell the bike and pick up another hobbie. :( My first bike was stolen, now this...

Ouch dude! I hope you are okay as well. I'm sorry to hear about your bike too. I take it that this is a single vehicle accident? But don't give it up unless you really want to. However, i'm really curious what really happened? Did you do a complete pre-ride check on your bike after you paid for the work? And hmmm... is this a new bike? 600mi service? And not at a certified Yamaha mechanic? I'd be suspicious of what was done on your bike, like for example, did they tighten up everything that they had to take off to do the service, tire pressure, no loose hoses or brake calipers, caps tightened etc etc. My friend told me that when he took his bike to a mechanic, he would question the service rep on anything done to the bike, he also would drive around the lot before he left the service area that way he could find any problems. And he also did a pre-ride check on his bike too. But all together he took his bike back to certified Yamaha service.

So sorry to hear that dude.

Hey sprokkett. since you said that it was near freezing point. Was there ice on the road or curve? Was there any black ice or sand/gravel on the road? Did you ride over any utility manholes which may have been slippery?

Thanks for asking, Roninone, I am sore as hell today. My whole left side is aching, and I have a nice rasberry on my left hip. But, I am more angry and embarrased than anything. Interesting questions you posted. I really don't think it was shaddy work. However, I would not have a way of proving it now. I know the bike shop has been around for many years and I always see a lot of bikers go there. The guy is really cool and he did come out to help me bring it back into his shop. Unless its trick to get more money?

I do think I may have giving a bit too much throttle around the bend and it was cold. The tires were probably not warm enough. I did not hit anyone nor did anyone hit me, thank God. I just felt the back end drop below me on the turn and I let the bike skid in front of me and I landed on my left side. It was a helpless feeling, I never felt before on the bike. I always had felt I was in control... Weird, I have gone 120 mph with so much conviction. I go around a bend doing 10 mph and I feel totally inept...

Well, the stats say if you get in an accident or wreck it is usualy within the first 6 months of riding or around 1000 miles. I suppose I am adding to that statistic... :(

I do love this sport too much to give it up. As long as I keep learning and staying healthy, I will be ok.

Question: How long did you let the bike warm up? Living in Pittsburgh and riding year round I've noticed when it's real cold if I don't let everything warm up real nice the clutch will drag and release oddly. Sometimes it's smooth other times it pops real quick.
Question: How much did you lean over? I've riden on days where the road was real cold and when you dip into the corner the front gets no grip and starts to slide out. You have to be on your toes for the first mile or two.
Question: Was there anything on the tires? If you just picked your bike up from the shop, who knows what kind of puddles they pushed it through. I used to work at an auto garage and on most days I garuntee a puddle of the following, oil, anti-freezes, tranny fluid, water and mountain dew.

Don't worry about the head-trip you're gonna through. You'll get over it. Most important thing is to go riding as soon as your bike is done. Don't let the fear keep you on the sidelines. You'll get over it.

it is true that cold pavement can help your tires grip. i am a wheelie man and i have noticed that on cold days you can through one hell of a wheelie. anyway, about warming it up. you should be careful in that area. I keep my bike in the garage and even when i take it out of there and ride it still has throttle lag or vise versa.

Anyway hope you are ok and that you will continue riding

I think you just had too much power to the ground and it kicked your ass end out from under you. i was doing wheelies in a parking lot , which had a slick/smooth pavement and as i put the front end down i started to break and the bike shot out from under me exactly like what happend to you..it took me forever to figure out what went wrong then i finally realized as i was down shifting i must have dropped it all the way into first which threw all my power to the rear wheel real quick , thus causing a sort of burn out and making the bike shoot out from under me. I was ok bike just scratched **** on the right side but it was 1200 in damage
