the 03-05 have quite a lot of inprovements such as deltabox 3, fuel injection, redesigned exhaust, fuel maps, 05's have inverted shocks

Go to www.yamaha-motor.com and look for yourself and see whats there....i like the new bikes fuel injection can be a big benifit with a power commander if you know how to program it

Fuel injections great if you understand it. Plus if you ever have a battery die you're fkd. No juice...no fuel.

I'm partial to the '02. It's been out a few years. There's tons of aftermarket. There's tons of parts on ebay. I don't need my laptop to fix it.
Plus to 98% the difference between the two is undetectable.
Ridden by the right person, an EX500 can smoke an R6. Check out a trackday and watch somebody on an RS50 pass you.
Also if you go old, they're cheaper to buy and insurance doesn't abuse you as much.

i persoally like the older r6's not the fact that i own one but because to me i think they look better. and yes there is a crap load more of aftermarket components out there for the older bikes.

well just like a car the longer the model is out for the more aftermarket parts there are for them. im sure in 2008 the 2002-05 r6s are going to have assloads of aftermarket parts

Hi, I have owned a 2000 (stolen), 2001(written off, see SRADMAD.com for the video), 2003 (traded) and am currently running in my 05R6.
I have found little difference between them all and they were all very reliable. i didn't like the forks on the 03 bike and spent most of last year trying to sort them, the 05 forks feel like a huge improvement. I would advise fitting a steering damper if you have a pre injection model and ride fast.
