I just did my first oil change on my 08 r6 and decided to cut open the filter to take a look at its internals. After looking at the oil filter/oil sticky thread i decided this would be worth my time. Contrary to what that threads link shows for a yamaha filter (i think it shows a 07 and prior filter) this new shorter filter has no bypass spring of any kind! So this means that if your filter were to get clogged or if the oil couldn't flow fast enough through it, your engine would starve of oil! Maybe there is a bypass system of some kind that i don't know about built into the engine or otherwise externally on the bike? I just wanted to get others thoughts on this.

Here are some pics...they were taken with my phone as i am at work. You can see the yamaha filter on the left and an oem honda automotive filter with its bypass spring on the right. The yamaha has no spring of any kind...just more filtration media on the bottom.

Alot of people recommend the Mobil 1 M-110 filter. It fits all 99-08 R6's, its a bit bigger then the yamaha/denso stock filter but has a bypass. But with the bigger capacity of the Mobil filter the bike will take a full 3 quarts of oil instead of 2.5-2.75 otherwise there wont be enough oil flow and the oil light will constantly come on.

For 2006-2009 R6 oil filters go to imotorcyclestore.com and order EMGO oil filter part #0500-1082232 ($6.95 ea) this is the black filter. If you want Chrome order part#0500-1082222($8.95 ea)

You can't go wrong with an Emgo filter I have used them for quite awhile......

you wont have any issue without the bypass.. the only need for a bypass on a oil filter is for cold weather. you might have a hard time starting your bike in the winter.

I got the scotts stainless steal oil filter in mine. It's the best ever!

Check out the Scotts Stainless Steal oil filter. It's reusable and filters out better than conventional. Also Cold start up are better because it flows oil better through this filter on cold starts not having to dump unfiltered motoroil into the bike. goolge it
