What's the deal with motorcycle licenses? How old do you have to be to get a license to drive a motorcycle? And, how's the insurance on an R6?

depends what state you live in....i live in CT and its 16 to get a motorcycle licence but you have to have a drivers licence first, and get a motorcycle permit before you go for the licence aka how the state makes a quick 250.00 .... as far as insurance its relitivly inexpensive....i think my new R6 is like 400 bucks a yr or something like that....depends on age, bike, accidents, how long you have had your licence, any driver and motorcycle training and etc. best thing to do as far as obtaining a licence is go to www.yahoo.com and search exactly like this "state dmv" except put the name of your state in where it says state "Connecticut DMV" and etc

I just looked into that today...
I live in PA, and as long as you have a drivers license you just walk into the DMV and for $5 they hand you a motorcycle permit (which is basically the same as a license, except i guess you can't have a passenger or ride at night). Then for about $400 you can take a community college motorcycle saftey class, where they provide the bikes (250cc) to learn on. Then upon completion of that class they stamp your permit and you are a fully licensed operator. (and it will also lower insurance drastically). State farm gave me a quote of about $25-30/month for insurance (as long as you have a car on the same account)...

hope that helps

wow you are getting hosed on that class....ct offers it for about 125.00 but we also only get a 10% discount on insurance with the class as well....and are you sure you dont need to take a basic 16 question writen test for the permit?

No jota21's partially right. In PA you take no informative test to get a permit. Although it's $10 not five and it's only good for a year so you'll have to renew it four times over the course of you valid drivers license. Limitations are, no passengers, no riding after dark, and recommendations to ride with another rider who should be licensed. I brake rule 2 and 3 everyday when I ride to work for my 3-11. I've been stopped at dui checks, I've been stopped in other states, I've been stopped without a permit because I forget to mail in my check to PennDOT. It's a huge joke in this state. Mainly because inorder to pass the test you have to complete 3 figure 8's in I think a 30 x 30 box. I've disputed this twice because I've gone to the test facility and tried to walk the bike through the course, which it won't do even at lock to lock, and failed. The skill PA wants you to learn is to hang you ass off the opposite direction and jacknife the bike through the course. I declined. Bueracracy has kept PA from altering their testing methods since the '60s.

hahaha you arent the only state.....working at a Police Dept in CT, they dont really care so long as you are remotetly obeying the speed limit and wearing a helmet...they have basic protocall to not engauge persuit if over 65 on any rd....they can set up some sort of rd block but its not worth it cause a bike could toast a cruiser, and if they are chasing you, and you crash they are basically at fault... so they dont really like to do it, not worth it, cause how many times do you hear of a motorcycle doing extensive damage or killing someone....its few and far inbetween.
