That is the set-up I run. K&N in the box, a full Micron system, and the matching dynojet jet-kit. It easily added 15% in performance. She screams like a banchee, sorry I don't have a microphone. But can be kept quiet under low rpms for late night returns to the homestead.
This smoothed out the dip in power around 4-6k rpms. And really turned on the afterburner when the numbers on the tach start to get bigger.
Things to watch for on this model.... a leaking battery eating the finish off your swingarm, the big sprocket nut coming loose holding down your front sprocket (there was a safety recall here in the states not sure if it applies down under), possible tranny problems in 2nd and 6th gear.
For the tranny there was a run of bad gearsets that would shear the "dogs" off the 2nd and 6th gear cogs. This would then make it fell like it was slipping. If your bike has made it to about 10k miles and doesn't have the problem it won't show up any later. At least that has been my observation.
I've got 27k miles on mine and so far so good. I've done some other performance mods that you might be interested in: braided stainless steel brake lines give more clamping power, EBC HH+ brake pads give more bite, Vortex clip-ons allow movement of the orientation to the rider and are cheaper to replace in a crash, frame sliders lessen the damage after a crash, and rebuild the forks with some better internals. About the forks, these were very good when they were brand new, after a few thousand miles they started to show signs of sagging and wear. I've replaced the springs inside with a heavier rate spring and also replaced the compression valve with a better one for more adjustability. Next on the agenda is either a fox or penske shock. The factory one, again was good when it was new, but doesn't offer the precision need for hardcore street riders and/or track riders. Plus it realy isn't a good platform for rebuilding it's best to jump to something better.

gr8 reply fiero... Thanks for the info mate... guess i've gotta do a lil' background check on my monster ...especially w.r.t the sprocket nut comin loose ...Hmmm... thats scary stuff
Tranny issues... well, the odo is at 7500 kms now ..havent had any issues till now ...but i did notice a lil' bitta 'extra' noise wen the bike is in neutral ...the sound disappers wen i engage the clutch
Gears... they're still the same ol' clunky Yam. ones... i should say that 1st 'n 2nd gears are real head turners ...'n anti-chick magnets ;-)
Exhaust... Like i mentioned b4, Micron serpent is wat i'm looking at... heard a lil' sound clip yesterday ..but that was on a 06 R6 ..still dunno how it'll sound on an 01 model. with just the air filter+Full Micron system would there be any diff. in performance at all ..????
Extras... am looking at aTOMTOM rider GPS system (is it goood??) ..jus had Michelin Pilot power tyres fitted on... looking to get some track riding soon ..its still winter here ..so, riding is a nightmare.

Oh about the serpent exhaust. When I got mine micron wasn;t making a serpent header for the anything pre '03. The '03 with FI was the first model micron made a serpent header.
The standard replacement header from micron is still a huge improvement over stock. First it weighs about half, plus it has smoother bends and larger ports to facilitate quicker movement of gases.
I think the micron is a very good choice, add a k&n and you'll be happy. And if it runs a little lean, you can always lift the needles in the carbs (which is a free mod) or go professional and get a real jet-kit.
