I have had other Yamahas. Mostly dirt bikes and my R6 is the first street bike. ('03) On my others when you were checking the oil with the dip stick, to check the level you didn't screw it back in. Is that the same for their street bikes? or check it by screwing the dip stick back in?

Step 1) Unscrew dipstick and remove

Step 2) Clean and replace (do not rethread)

Step 3) Stand bike upright

Step 4) Check level on dipstick

Step 5) Lather, Rinse, Repeat as needed

Thats what I thought. I don't think my new manual says anything about doing that but all of my other bike manuals did.

I still wanna know why they (yamaha) went back to dipsticks when they already were using sight glasses on bikes  does it make more power ?? In my opinion if you keep uncapping the oil system with the dipstick and fooling with it, grime, dirt etc. could more likely enter a usually closed loop system.

The best solution is to keep your bike clean...this isn't a dirtbike so it needs to be clean. Plus a dipstick is more accurate than a sighting glass and over time the glass foggs up and makes proper level checks almost impossible.

IC your point. If the sight glass is removable & cleanable why not keep it ??? It'll take LOT of grime to muck it up !!!!! My friends' 01 FZR1, the sight glass is clear'er'er and er than a bell....

OK...here's the best reason...would you like to lowside your bike with a piece of glass between the asphalt and your oil? This is more likely the main reason a bike like the R6 (that was ment to be raced) doesn't have brittle glass...................

But ITS SOOOO MUCH EASIER to check a sight glass... and grime... well... time to clean out the system.
