: Micron shorty-does size matter?
SkidMark 04-16-2006, 11:29 PM I am looking at a Micron Slip on and noticed Indysuperbikes.com has them with the choice of "shorty" in lengths of 240, 300, 350 and 400mm. I just measured my stock can ('03 R6) and its around 508mm, give or take. After conversion to inches the 240mm is 9.5 inches long! That seems pretty damn small compared to my current. Does anyone have any pics with a shorty mounted they can post? And is the lack of length going to be noticable in performance (my girlfriend tells me not to worry size doesnt matter). The '06 has the shorty but its set low and kicks off the the side which looks pretty cool, I'm thinking the short can mounted up high would look strange. Any comments appreciated, Thanks Dave
burntout 04-19-2006, 02:35 AM I've seen a couple of these about in mags and the such and in my opinion they look the muts nuts (good), they give a GP look to the bike which is pretty tight.
Regarding performance I can only see gains occuring, the shorter length should mean the gasses have less trouble getting out helping the engine to breath better. should sounds good as well.
Micron do an awesome 'megaphone' GOP style one which would look awesome on the 06 or earlier models for that matter.
SkidMark 04-20-2006, 09:53 PM True, true, shorter can equals less restriction. I will have to keep an eye out for pics of the set up. I did a quick search on the internet and found no pics. Never heard of a Micron GOP system, will give it a look.
Truth be told I'm looking for a new slip on for asthetics and sound. For performance I going to install 15/50 520 conversion and Powercommander.
Any personal favorites on slip ons?
thanks for the response, Dave
burntout 04-21-2006, 02:40 AM Nah, you wont have heard of a GOP system as I meant o write 'GP' style system!! I couldn't be bothered to change the post.
sorry about that.
I'll see if I can find a link for a pic or two.
SkidMark 04-22-2006, 01:39 PM Right on, thanks!
I'll keep an eye out for them. Also, do you think these short cans would be to loud for street use?
Thanks
SkidMark 04-22-2006, 03:31 PM Hey Burn, I did find a pic of a Gixxer with a shorty on it. It does look pretty damn sweet!!!
Now the question is, will I get pulled for noise pollution!!
below is the link to the pic.

burntout 04-23-2006, 04:19 AM hey,
not sure what the filth are like over there so it's hard to say. I doubt they offer these shorter cans in a 'road legal' version so chances are they'll be making over 80db - which is only a good thing as far as I can see!
if you are interested in performance you could opt for an 'evo' exhaust - most manufacturers offer a half race half road pipe which can be turned into either by simply removing a baffle held in place with either a circlip or allen bolt.
I'm now about to order one myself.
it is a good comprimise as should you get pulled over by the old bill you can just slap the baffle in when you get home and jobs a good 'en - they won't badger you again.
SkidMark 04-27-2006, 11:57 PM Thanks Burn, not sure how forgiving they are over here either however I've heard some loud ass Harley's that do not seem to get the shaft from the Bobbies (isnt that English for cop?) Out of curiosity I emailed Micron and asked them the same question. I pasted the response below as an FYI.
Yes, the shorter the can, the louder it is, so a 240mm can is VERY loud!
Let's talk about ALL aftermarket exhausts, including ours, and noise rules...
There is nothing, and we repeat, nothing which is legal for road use in
the United States except your stock exhaust system. Any alteration or
modification of any emission control device is illegal, and may render
the vehicle illegal for use on public roads and highways. If any
company tries to tell you differently, or says their product is for road
use, ask to see the EPA-DOT certifications, in writing, for your exact
year and model with the exact product they are selling on your vehicle.
Nobody we know of has such certifications. All aftermarket exhaust
products, ours included, are sold for off road, competition use only.
This is not to scare you, but to inform you correctly of what is
available and what the rules of the aftermarket exhaust product business
really are.
In terms of power, graph is attached...
Let us know if you have any other questions.
So....all after markets including slip ons are illegal no matter what db level? This I didn't know. I will have to research the RCW's of WA DOT, but I am thinking that unless you are insanely loud you shouldnt get hassled...however if your exhaust is minimally loud and your a d*** about it they can give you a ticket.
Thanks, Dave
burntout 04-28-2006, 06:59 AM unusual - over here you can change the can as long as it is still BS marked (british standard) or meets new euro regs which are starting to hamper us in all our day to day living!
bobbies are the police on the street -typified by their crazy helmets and bobbing walk caused by the fact they normally have their hands tucked in their body armour (not allowed to have their hands in their pockets you see).
normally we refer to the police as (and I'm open to suggestions here.....)
the old bill
the firm
pigs
filth
the scum
the sweeny
cozzers
and thats all I can think of........
unless they pull you over in which case it is 'sir'!!
SkidMark 05-10-2006, 11:02 PM FYI for all,
I just finished installing the Micron Ultralight Titanium shorty 350mm. Sounds GREAT! ! Not as loud as I was afraid it would be. Wasnt as pleased with the hardware, expected everything to fit like a glove. It says keeps rear pegs but the mounting bracket kicks the can side pegs out and forward. Didnt look right, I just removed both which gives the bike a nice clean look. I will take some pics and post later.
SkidMark 05-11-2006, 10:54 PM Holy F$@&,
Took the bike for the normal ride to work and am impressed. I could be biased since this is my first slip on, but it sounded awesome and felt like I gained some HPs. I know its all in my head since you only gain less then a few ponies with a slip-on but from the sound and knowing she's breathing easier she felt faster!
Ran an errand with my g'friend in her turbocharged Volvo C70 and smoked past her going 121mph on I-5. Now I'm wondering what a PowerCommander will do to smooth her out.......and then a 520... and then some Pilot Powers...and then stacks...and then...?
SPRING HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!
Sasquatch 06-20-2006, 10:13 PM I'm a professional metal worker, so I custom fabricated a short pipe using an existing Yoshimura RS-3 stainless pipe that I had lying around. It's only about 8" to 9" long. I had a noticable increase in horsepower as well as an insanely growly sound. I changed the jetting as if I was running a straight pipe also. In my opinion, shortys ROCK!
MavR6 07-18-2006, 12:56 PM Just put a shorty slip-on exhaust on my '03. Took me forever to find one. Sound is amazing, it wraps up a lot faster and harder. The weight distribution is a lot better, I can "think" of where I want the bike and it'll go there. Shorty exhaust's are sick.
lancashire_dry 07-18-2006, 06:30 PM Regarding performance I can only see gains occuring, the shorter length should mean the gasses have less trouble getting out helping the engine to breath better.
I'm no expert but the length of the pipe [and diameter] will have a significant impact on the performance of the bike.
Whether it would be significantly noticeable to an average rider is debateable, but any change to the overall length of the pipe including headers will change torque and power.
There may not be a change in outright figures but it is likely that it will appear somewhere else in the rev range. A shorter pipe will lead to peak power and torque higher in rpm.
SkidMark 09-10-2006, 11:25 PM I was planning on sending pics sooner but I was busy riding!!!!
What do you guys think?

dirtbag506 11-22-2006, 03:10 PM Wow that looks nice. I have an 02 on the way this week sometime and Im thinking of making a custom shorty system for it, styled like the exhaust on that naked zx-10 in cycle world (two tiny dirtbike cans under the motor, attached right to the header) looks incredible.
burnrubber 11-29-2006, 02:25 PM sssssssssssssssexy
burntout 11-30-2006, 07:30 AM looks good, not sure about the big Yam sticker above it but def. looks better than stock.
your mission now is to see if you can ground that one out!!
BIg_Ern 11-30-2006, 08:12 PM The high mount pipe still hasen't grown on me yet. The bike still looks good though!
Sasquatch 12-04-2006, 10:33 AM You kidding, Ern? I love high mounts! I'd have installed my Shorty as a high mount, but I don't think my wife would appreciate me removing her peg. I think she loves being on the bike more than I do!
As far as shorty pipes go, I love 'em! I make my custom exhaust cans just long enough to provide some back-pressure and compression. I also love the full race look and sound. If done right, you can squeeze some extra HP out of them too due to being more like a straight pipe. I've found that most pipes actually get a little bit more of a throatier growl when you take some length off, but that all depends on what brand the stinger is before I customized it. Yosh, D&D, 2 Bros. and Micron all sounded better and meaner after I shortened, repacked and put an airtight seal on them. Akrapovic on the other hand, sounded whinier and obnoxious after I was done with it. That was the only pipe I've ever customized that I wasn't really all that happy with. It looked great and performed well, but the sound left something to be desired. Sounded kind of like a 2 stroke YZ 250! I'm putting a D&D shorty up for sale. Whatever specs the buyer wants. I'll make a 1 of a kind can. Pick your length, color (Powder Coat) to match any bike or accessories, or Ceramic Coated (Chrome finish) to keep exhaust temps down and make it so you don't burn legs or shoes anymore. (Still heats up, but not nearly as hot and it cools down almost instantly!) Add extra power with Chrome Ceramics too, as the heat from your exhaust gets expelled out the tip rather than leeching into the metal canister. I've got my entire engine block/casing/covers done, as well as my entire exhaust...header to tip.
Operating temps went from about 90-94 Celcius to an average of about 78-84 Celcius! Even on the track, my temps rarely exceed 86 Celcius.
Well, enough rambling from me! Check out the "For Sale" forum if interested.
SkidMark 12-10-2006, 08:51 PM I agree with Big Ern, now that I've had it on awhile I think the low mount would give her a cleaner profile. Still much better than stock and I am not unhappy with the purchase.
Burn, no like the big Yam?? Do you think bare would look better?
burntout 12-11-2006, 05:53 AM I've always preffered understated graphics / logos for that stealth look. gives the police less to reference in the event of passing one too fast!
rest of the bike looks smart though - it's got the paintjob I want on my '99. I've got the silver, black, rust coloured one. as said before though - soon to be replaced by an all black RSV1000. yeah boy!!
SkidMark 12-11-2006, 11:20 AM Burn, now that you brought it to my attention, it bugs me. Especially there, right above the pipe. LOL. I too like the understated look rather than all the bling.
Going Italian huh, good choice, thats a f'ing sweet bike! Post some pics when you get.
burntout 12-12-2006, 03:32 AM not quite there yet - just got to service my 6, shine her up real nice then get her advertised and sold. within 4 months though - it'll be a nice present for my 24th birthday I feel.
Sasquatch 12-13-2006, 08:33 AM Yeah, that'll be a sweet bike dude! Pics are a must. Last September I customized a Termignoni dual exhaust system for a flat black and red RSV Mille 1000 for a guy down in Vancouver. Man! Probably one of the sweetest bikes I've seen in a while. He wanted the exhaust modified into somewhat of a shorty can. (Only wanted 3.5" taken off.) He wanted the canisters chrome ceramic with red banding and rivets and a flat black mid-pipe/dual splitter. Looked great after! (Looked great before though too!) Some people buy these exotic bikes and still pay lots of $ to customize them. This brings me to one conclusion.
I need more money!
burntout 12-13-2006, 08:54 AM was it an RSV1000 or the newer shaped RSV1000R (the R being the base model, the 'Factory' replacing the old R version!)?
Only after the newer shape now, after seeing it in the flesh a few times it's a must!
I'll sort out some pics and vids when it's all sorted, until then expect more goshite off me re. the R6 and other general non-sense!!!
