Hi, Im new to the site but it looks great! I just bought an 04 r6, and I was just wondering what would be the easiest way to change the oil, like what side to go in on, or what to take off to access the engine? thanks!

Just take both bottom fairings off and everything is clearly accessable and you can get to it all easily.

If you need something to keep the bike straight, I found a sweet deal. A pair of stands (front & rear) for $99 at www.handyindustries.com. You would normally dish out that much for just one.

If you're trying to click on the link, remove the period at the end. I guess you can't use proper grammer when including a web link.

Oil+filter= ALOT cheaper than a motor, Change it often (3000mi) max. If you rev high alot 10-15k RPM for long stetches "track or agressive twisties" often I'd cut that in half.

Completely agree on the short change interval. Recently had the dealer do valves @ 19k miles due to lots of track time and the 2k max oil change was clear on the motor internals. Everthing was clean and in spec like the day she rolled out of the factory.

Glad to know that my baby will be o.k.. Hey, somebodys been tellin my friend "newbie", that its O.K to put auto. synthetic in his bike!!!!! He called me an said that his gearbox wasn't shifting after he changed his oil. I asked if it was "car" or "4 stroke motorcycle" oil; he said " full synthetic 5-30" I asked was I bike oil ? He said a web site said that it was the same./ Unless you ride a Ducati  which will have a dry clutch that will not be an issue. But, when you have a wet clutch i.e HONDA, KAWI,YAMI, Etc. you oil WILL affect your clutch.. :)

I have been hearing a lot about Royal Purple full synthetic motorcycle oil. If you friend wants the full synth. get this stuff. Royal P. says it's good for a 5-10%HP increase (wich on a 100hp engine is 5-10HP). There was an independant study on it with some R6's and they got between 3-5% increase on a dyno!!! That's more than some slipon's!!!!! Royal Purple is going in on my next oil change.

Here's something you all want to watch for. Synthetic oil is generally superior to "dead dinosaurs" because it has a higher shear control ability due to different additives and molecular design which is great for us because of the constant mesh trans we all use. However, you need to check and see the parifin and heavy metals contents of alot of these oils. I think it was Sportrider that did a few articles like feb '04 or so about comparing different oils. The problem with the detergents and waxes and additives is that while they improve your change interval they are absorbing acids and other harmful combustion byproducts, which in the long run harm internals. Also you may want to shy away from oils that claim improved hp. Like silkolene race oil. If you dip your fingers in regular yamalube 20-40 and rub your fingers together you know something's there. But when you use one of those race oils, albeit they have the same viscosity (which is tested in a lab under controled situations) it feels like water between your fingers.
I have over 20k on my bike. I use regular black cap yamalube. When I took the case cover off to replace the clutch everything was shiny and as new as from the factory, same for under the top when I checked the valves.
