Dampers - It can or can not be considered "body gear". Depending on how you handle tank slap at 135 mph and a possum desides to cross your path.
I highly recommend them and I won't ride w/out it. Seen too much  w/tank slaps.

On my 04 r6, it tank slapped loads until i tweaked the suspension. (ie set up the Sag front and rear). 30mm (front) and 22mm (Rear). This pretty much removed all the tank slap on all but the bumpiest roads. Recently got an Ohlins Steering damper which made the bike more stable in high speed turns and a generally more 'solid' feel to the bike.
I would recommend a steering damper to everyone, but alot of the tank slap can be reduced with correctly setup suspension too.
